Research Associate & Software Engineer
Information System Laboratory (ISL), Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH)
Part of the STREAMSTORE research project, funded by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (HFRI) (Grant ID: HFRI-FM17-1998). The project aims to fully support highly elastic, scalable, and fault-tolerant stateful stream-processing systems, through the evolution of the elasticity, predictability, and availability of scalable data store technology beyond the state of the art.
● Focus on designing efficient and highly scalable stream processing ETL pipelines using Apache Flink, Apache Spark and Apache Kafka
● Attempting to identify methods to achieve rapid recovery of Stream Processing Systems to ensure uninterrupted analysis in the face of failures. HDFS is utilized for persistent reliable storage.
● Modified source code of open-source projects Apache Flink and HDFS to extend their functionality
● Responsible for creating bash scripts to automate the installation, building, and deployment of the frameworks used
● Responsible for setting up large-scale cluster experiments in Linux Servers
● Actively contributing in the writing of technical reports

Sep. 2022 - Dec. 2022
Internship - Research Intern
Huawei Technologies Research & Development (UK) Ltd
Worked as a member of the Database Team and contributed to the Heron project, which focused on developing a next-generation, cloud-native data analytics platform.
● Participated in the design and implementation of a Query Engine, in C++
● Main contribution: Development of different sorting (Hybrid Sort, Segment Sort, Lazy Sort) and joining operators (Grace Hash Join, Hybrid Grace Hash Join, Segmented Grace Join, Lazy Hash Join) of the engine
● Underlying functionality of these operators relied on algorithms that exchanged writes for reads, resulting in improved performance
● Operators were designed to efficiently handle larger data sizes and overcome any memory constraints
-
Jul. 2021 - Aug. 2021
Internship - Big Data Engineer
Proxim.ai
Worked on a proof-of-concept Big Data project for a large telecom company client, employing state-of-the-art frameworks to complete the processing of large amounts of data. The primary focus revolved around leveraging customer location analytics to optimize services and enhance the customer experience.
● Performed effective troubleshooting, resolved issues, and deployed incomplete ETL pipelines
● Optimized existing pipelines and extended their functionality
● Designed and implemented new ETL pipelines based on analytics of customer location data
● Used Apache Spark & Apache Flink frameworks for Data Processing and Apache Kafka for real-time Data Ingestion
● The full stack consisted of AWS S3 & MongoDB for Data Storage, Kubernetes for cluster deployment, Apache Airflow} to monitor workflows
-
Jul. 2018 - Sep. 2018
Internship - Software Engineer
Plastika Kritis S.A.
Designed and implemented a dynamic reporting tool leveraging Java and Apache POI API. This solution automated the reporting processing, processing large amounts of raw data in csv format. By utilizing this data, the tools generated insightful and visually appealing analytics reports in Excel, while accommodating various templates for versatile reporting options.
-
Jun. 2016 - Sep. 2016
Internship - Software Engineer
Plastika Kritis S.A.
Designed and implemented an application using Visual Basic for Application (VBA Excel) to efficiently handle and process medical data for employees. By identifying data patterns, I conducted comprehensive analyses and provided valuable insights and visualizations for individual employees, along with additional desired statistics for the entire workforce.

MindSpace Challenge 2018, Chania Finals
Participant in the Chania Final of the Mindspace Challenge, a 3-day educational workshop designed to equip individuals with valuable skills in entrepreneurial thinking. I presented my idea for a technology-based solution that aimed to reduce food waste. By leveraging data analytics and AI, my proposal offered food and beverage services better insights into their waste patterns, enabling them to reduce unnecessary consumption. Mentoring sessions during the workshop allowed me to refine my initial concept before presenting the final version of my idea to the committee.
